2020 ncf-Envirothon competition canceled

WASHINGTON – Today, the National Conservation Foundation (NCF) and the Nebraska Association of Resources Districts (NARD) announced the cancellation of the 2020 NCF-Envirothon to protect the health and safety of the general public and to prevent the spread of COVID-19. The annual event was slated for July 26-Aug. 1, in Lincoln, Nebraska.

“This was not an easy decision, but our primary concern is the health and safety of the students, as well as the general public, and we feel it’s in the best interest to cancel the 2020 NCF-Envirothon Nebraska event at this time,” NCF Chairman Steve Robinson said. “We know that many students look forward to this competition and are truly sorry for this turn of events; however, we hope students stay engaged in the Envirothon mission, and we encourage them to look ahead to preparations for next year.”

The top priority for the organizers is the health and safety of students, advisors, volunteers, sponsors and education partners.
"The NARD’s goal, first and foremost, is to protect the health and safety of the general public and do whatever we can to assist in controlling the novel coronavirus,” NARD President Jim Eschliman said. “While the cancellation is a disappointment, our dedication to environmental education and protecting lives, property and the future through natural resources management remains strong. We look forward to welcoming NCF- Envirothon competitors to Nebraska in the future.”

The NCF-Envirothon is an environmental and natural resources education competition, reaching more than 25,000 high school students across the United States, Canada and China annually. The hands-on competition is held outdoors to give students a chance to take their classroom learning and apply it in a natural setting.

To protect public health, many local state and provincial Envirothon competitions have also been canceled across North America, including Nebraska’s state competition. The NCF, NARD and other state/provincial Envirothon program leaders continue to follow recommended guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

“We thank the participants and volunteers for their ongoing dedication to the program, and we wish them and their families good health through these difficult times,” Robinson said.

Teams that have already registered to compete at the 2020 NCF- Envirothon will receive a full refund. Questions about the NCF-Envirothon can be directed to NCF-Envirothon Program Manager Jennifer Brooks at (800) 825-5547 or by email at administration@envirothon.org.

The NCF-Envirothon is a hands-on environmental problem-solving competition that builds leadership skills for high school students, grades 9-12 (ages 14-19), in the United States, Canada and China. The program educates future stewards, promotes E-STEM (environment, science, technology, engineering and math) education, creates community awareness and fosters appreciation and respect for the natural world. NCF- Envirothon is a program of the National Conservation Foundation (NCF), a 501(c)3 organization, and supported by the National Association of Conservation Districts (NACD). As sister organizations, the NCF and NACD share a common mission of locally-led conservation with the NCF focused on developing the next generation of conservation leaders. Greetings Everyone:

In an effort to minimize the spread of COVID-19, the Colorado Envirothon event scheduled for April 21-22 in Pueblo is canceled. We know teams have put in a lot of work and preparation for this year's competition, but the safety of students, teachers, coaches, volunteers, and staff is a priority in these unprecedented times.

Planning for the 2021 Colorado Envirothon will begin shortly and information will be posted to the CACD and CO Envirothon websites as the process develops.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me via email or phone, 719-686-0020.

ONCE AGAIN, THE WOODLAND PARK HIGH SCHOOL CONTINUES THEIR WINNING STREAK AT THE 2019 COLORADO ENVIROTHON COMPETITION

Woodland Park High School’s AP Environmental Science team once again took first place honors at the 2019 Colorado Envirothon Competition for the fourth time.  The event was held on April 23 - 24, in Aurora, CO! This year’s event took place at the Arapahoe County Fair Grounds in Aurora, with 8 teams participating coming from all over Colorado, to compete in the Colorado Envirothon’s annual natural resource science-based contest. The second-place team was Centennial High School from San Luis in the San Luis Valley and, the third-place team was from Woodland Park High School.

The Colorado Envirothon committee would like to thank all of the conservation districts, financial sponsors, contest volunteers, instructors, judges, and Colorado State Conservation Board and staff for the matching grant we received to help with the expenses and for all of the contributions, which made the 2018 COE event such a success!

The winning team members from Woodland Park High School;  Isabella Snyder, Samuel Cummings, Cailin Kirtley, Malina Kirtley, and Cameron Vela. Dan Ganoza, who is the School’s AP Environmental Science teacher and acted as the team’s advisor and coach. Assisting him was Rose Banzhaf.  These Colorado students and their coaches will be heading to the international NCF Envirothon competition in Raleigh, North Carolina this summer, in July.

Other Colorado schools, that made the trip to Aurora for the 2019 contest, were from Center, Del Norte, Ft Garland, San Luis, Saguache, and Woodland Park.

During the two-day competition, all students are tested in a total of five areas of natural resource science content, including:  aquatic ecology, forestry, wildlife, and soils. Teams also have to make an oral presentation on solving a current natural resource issue problem, with this year’s topic being “Agriculture and the Environment: Knowledge and technology to feed the world”. Teamwork and critical thinking are the basis for a successful outcome at this fun and educational contest.

COE thanks all of this year’s participants and their school sponsors. The date and location of the 2020.  More information about the Colorado Envirothon program can be obtained from the website at  www.coloenvirothon.org/
